What a method statement is, and when you need one
A method statement is a written description of how a task will be done safely. It breaks the job into a safe sequence, names the hazards and the control measures, and lists the equipment and PPE, so everyone on site works the same way. It normally sits next to a risk assessment, and the pair together is what the trade calls RAMS.
There is no single law that names the method statement, but the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations require you to plan and control significant risks, and for higher-risk work most clients and principal contractors will not let you start without one. How to fill it in well
- Keep it specific. A generic method statement copied off the internet is worse than useless if it does not match the actual task. Describe this job, on this site.
- Sequence it. Write the steps in the order they happen, so anyone can follow the safe method from set-up to hand-back.
- Pair hazard with control. For every hazard you list, say exactly how it is controlled, not just that it exists.
- Get it signed. The sign-off is the proof that the crew read it. Without signatures it is just a document.
